PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND I began working with kids as an undergraduate at Berkeley by working in the Oakland Public Schools and then, later, at Napa State Hospital. I received my bachelor’s degree at U.C. Berkeley and then worked for a year as a teacher at Napa State Hospital on one of the children’s units. My post-graduate psychology training took place in the Boston area. I received an M.A. degree in Child Study at Tufts University and a Ph.D. in Psychology at Boston University. I worked at Stanford for a year and then spent three more years in Boston as a Post-Graduate Fellow in the Department of Child Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. While enrolled in my doctoral program I completed two pre-doctoral internships in psychology: One at the Cambridge Guidance Center and a second at Westborough State Hospital and Framingham Youth Guidance Center. The first internship focused on work with children, adolescents, and families and the second emphasized the inpatient treatment of adults (Westborough State Hospital) as well as work with children and families (Framingham Youth Guidance Center). During my years in Boston, I also completed five years of post-graduate training in couples and family therapy at the Family Institute of Cambridge. At present, I hold appointments as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford Medical School and as a Research Fellow at the Mental Research Institute (a center for research and training in psychotherapy). At Stanford I have been teaching and supervising in the child psychology and child psychiatry training programs since 1989. I have been a member of the Core Faculty for the Child Psychiatry Training Programs (1992-2001) and continue to teach and supervise in Children's Health Council/Stanford psychology training programs (1989-present). I also have been involved in a variety of teaching and clinical supervisory roles at MRI during these years including Director of the MRI Clinic and faculty in the year long Narrative Therapy Training Program. I am an Approved Supervisor of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, a member of the American Family Therapy Academy, and a member of the American Psychological Association.
